Copper Country Railroads

North Country Railroads
Once the Copper Country was crisscrossed with tracks. Now the tracks
of the DSS&A only reach a little beyond Baraga. All the tracks north
of Houghton have now been removed. However, there are still some traces
of the railroads that once operated in the Copper Country. It is not
too difficult to travel along the roadbeds since they are now used in
the winter for snow mobiling. This page lists the railroads that I have
found operating at one time or another in the Copper Country, which
consists of Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon Counties. Many
of these were short lines operated by local mining and logging companies.
However, there where a few major lines operating in the Copper Country,
including the Chicago and Northwestern and the Chicago, Milwaukee, St.
Paul, and Pacific (the Milwaukee Road) railroads. In addition, there
were some paper railroads that were planned but never built. Now, only
the Wisconsin Central is active in some portions of Copper Country.

Eventually, I hope to add short summaries of each of these railroads.
Meanwhile, you can check the sources I used to compile this list to
learn more about these railroads.
